Uterine polyps are basically growths that have attached themselves to the inner wall of the uterus and also, they protrude into the cavity of the uterus. The sizes of polyps normally range from just a few millimeters to several centimeters. They are also are attached to the wall of the uterus by a thin stalk or a large base. One can have one or many polyps in the uterus. Normally, they are contained within the uterus however; they may occasionally slip down through the uterine opening into the vagina. Uterine polyps normally occur in women in their fifties and even in their forties but younger women may also have polyps.

                There are several symptoms that normally occur if you have a uterine polyp but sometimes they just grow without any symptoms or signs. The most common symptoms of uterine polyps are bleeding between menstrual periods, very heavy menstrual periods, irregular bleeding during menses and also infertility. Since, they often occur in women that have gone through menopause, vaginal bleeding after menopause is also a symptom. You should see a doctor if you have some of this symptoms so that you can get proper treatment for uterine polyps.

                Right now, doctors have not yet found the exact cause of uterine polyps but there have been studies that hormonal factors can play a very big role in the growth of uterine polyps. You have to remember the uterine polyps are estrogen-sensitive, meaning, they actually respond to estrogen in the same way as the lining in your uterus. So, you have to be very careful if you are using any type of contraceptive. If you suspect that you have polyps, you need to visit your doctor immediately.

                Uterine polyps are very common among women, but with all growths and diseases there are some people that have a greater risk of developing them. If you are obese, you will have a greater chance of actually developing polyps because your hormones are not balanced and most of the time you will be producing more estrogen that you really need. Also, if you have a history of hypertension and high blood pressure, you are perceived to have a greater risk of developing uterine polyps.

                There are some complications when you develop uterine polyps. You might have a hard time getting pregnant. However, removal of the polyps is able to boost your fertility. Also, if you do get pregnant and you have uterine polyps, you might have an increased risk of having a miscarriage.
